Mitchell Library Glasgow Police records please
« on: Thursday 21 July 16 10:31 BST (UK) »
Kia ora from New Zealand!

Would it be possible for someone to do a look up for me at Mitchell Library?

My Grandaunt Annie was born in 1894 in King Edward, Aberdeenshire.  Her biological father is listed as being George Milne, a Constable in the Glasgow Police Force. Her mother's name was Mary Urquhart.  At the time of her birth she had her mother's maiden name as her surname:

Annie Georgina Lyon Milne Urquhart

When Mary married William Jamieson, Annie took his last name.

We have been talking about it on the  New Zealand Board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=752419.0, as I had no information about Annie, so didn't know where to start in Scotland.

The wonderful Millmoor/ William can't find a record of a Constable George Milne - can any of you help?

Many thanks

KG

Not sure what Millmoor/William would have looked at but if you mail the archives at the Mitchell Library there is a computerised index they can look at for possible matches.

The index is just that, further details would require requesting the related volumes out of storage and going through them.

Hi KG

Try also looking at the links included by Sarah here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=697324.0

The first of these is the one mentioned already by S_L.

Not clear where you and William got to following up on George Milne.

Police contanstables did move around a bit. Have you seen this entry from 1891 before Annie was born? This George was also from Aberdeenshire:

George Milne 31 Police Constable b. Insch, Aberdeenshire
Mary Milne 30 b. Fyvie, Aberdeenshire
Alexander Milne    6 b. Denny, Stirlingshire
Robert Milne 4 b. Strathblane, Stirlingshire
George Milne 2 b, Strathblane, Stirlingshire

Address: Eden Kiln, Strathblane Stirlingshire

Not to be excluded for showing married I would think .... ::) However, he still shows in Stirlingshire (Falkirk) in 1901.

Wow, thanks for that!  Poor other Mary!  Unless she had passed away before George met my Mary...

Thanks for that - where did you find it?  I am a complete novice at looking for things in Scotland.  Thank goodness for you all!

That census entry came from a transcript of the census. The original image is only available from SP.

I would follow through though with the Mitchell Library though.

Can I ask, did Annie's birth cert actually give father father's name and occupation (ie. a Constable in the Glasgow Police Force). If so, he needed to have attended the Registrar's office to give his consent for his details to be included on the birth cert. Would a married man do this...not sure.
