William Currie
« on: Thursday 21 July 16 17:45 BST (UK) »
This week I have been banging my head against my brick walls and would appreciate some inspiration.

I have a William Currie who married Anne Ware Henderson in Newcastle in 1844 (gives father's name as George a mason).  Their first son George William Currie was born in Tynemouth , eldest daughter in Kingussie and next 4 children were born in Glasgow. He died in 1894 and his parents were give as George and Sarah ms unknown.  According to the censuses he was born in Invernessshire, one specifying Rothiemurchus. His given age would have him born about 1821.  I cannot find anything else on him or his parents.

Ok....

As it was the "Scottish Highlands" & gaelic would have been the language of many...Sarah had many variants such as Sara/Clara/Sorcha/Marion (YES!)....

Have you looked for George without putting a wife's name ?

Just trying different avenues  ::)

now there's a thought their son was apprently a gaelic speaker when he moved to England according to records.  I'll try that

Was William's father George still alive at the time of his marriage?

George is not a common forename for the Highlands so should be traceable on 1841 census at least if still alive in 1844.

I wonder if his father only spoke gaelic & gave his name as Seoras on census.........again, I'm just looking at different angles?

The name did bother me. It's William I know spoke garlic.  He's not listed as deceased in the marriage certificate but don't know if it was accurate.

I did wonder that if George was a Mason could he be from further south and gone north for a building project, met a local girl etc but that's all supposition on my part. At work now will try the different name combinations  tomorrow.

Now also trying to think of Gaelic names that could have been misheard as George in Newcastle. Mind in overtime mode, will be all the banging off brick walls:D.

Found a possible birth parents JOhn and Sarah.  It's the closest I've found recently.  Good possibility I think.

Scrub that found him! Was registered as Collie father George.  In Rothiemurhus in December 1819. :D
Why did I not think of Collie before?
