Isabella McKinnon - born 1842. Place of Birth?
« on: Sunday 24 July 16 02:23 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with the place name on the attachment. Looks like Isle of Rol to me but I can't find any such island.

It's from Isabella's marriage certificate. Aged 24 in 1866. Father John and mother Ann. John was a farmer.

Isabella migrated to Australia.

Please let me know if there is any further information required.

Thanks
Rickey

Wivenhoe, I was of the understanding that copyright provisions prevented me from doing so.

I have attached a bit more - hope that helps.

Just looking at it again. It could be 'Isle of Kol' I wonder whether it could be the 'Isle of Coll' spelled how it sounds?

Pretty remote place - will have a look and see if I can find McKinnons there.

Not sure about the copyright bit......do not want to lead you astray.....someone will clarify for us.

The benefit of seeing the certificate is to compare other script on the same document. The first letter could be K...looks similar to first letter of family name of minister..... Samuel  ?. But without knowing his name, that does not help.

I am sure that other people will contribute with ideas about it.

The census records 1851 and 1861 have family of John and Ann McKINNON, all born Portree, Inverness shire with children Isabella (b ~ 1843), Effy, Agnes / Angus,  Duncan, Marion and Peter.

Do you see these names among children of your Isabella?

Do you see family name for mother Ann McKINNON, and who are witnesses. What is family name for  Joseph, the groom?

If this (in the census) is the family of your Isabella, the birth place Portree on the census might help to decipher the birth place on the marriage certificate.

The first letter of the isle looks very similar to the 'K' in McKinnon. I saw that Isabella which looked pretty good  and  she is still there in 1861 but can't see her in 1871.  Remembering that Isabella got married in Australia in 1866. None of the names of the siblings in the 1851 census record are used for Isabella's children. She married Joseph (aka Jonas) Jennings.

I will see if I can find the family coming to Australia between 1861 and 1866

Thanks
Rickey

Could it be Port A Roi, as mentioned below??

GENUKI: Portree, Inverness-shire
www.genuki.org.uk › big › sct › INV

I would agree with "Isle of Kol" i.e. Coll.

The minister's name could be Kelso and the initial letter looks similar so could well be Isle of Kol (Coll).

Is this any help?

There is a baptism record (OPR) of an Isabella Mackinnon, parents John Mackinnon and Ann (MS MacQuarrie) on 3 May 1835, Coll.

Added - I know it's a few years earlier than 1842 but it could be either a sibling who died (common to give next one same name) or a 'fuzzy' age - how old was her husband?
