Well done, Ann  :) think you are spot on with that one for her. From NRS http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/search.aspx

Accused:

Mary Ann Butler, married, wife of Hugh Butler (co-accused), m.s. McCann (looks like a slip on the maiden name for her), Address: 47 Stirling Street, Cowcaddens, Glasgow, Origin: Native of Londonderry, Ireland

Catherine McCann, unmarried, millworker, Address: Meuse Lane, Glasgow, Origin: Native of Glasgow

Hugh Butler, married, Age: 28, labourer, Address: 47 Stirling Street, Cowcaddens, Glasgow, Origin: Native of Glasgow

Precognition refs AD14/1900/78

The actual trial on papers, 27 Feb 1900, JC26/1900/22, state:

Accused

Catherine McCann, unmarried, Verdict: Not guilty, Verdict Comments: Assoilzied, Sentence: Assoilzied and dismissed Previous convictions: theft - Glasgow police court, 7 November 1898

Mary Ann Butler, married, wife of Hugh Butler (co-accused), m.s. McCann, Verdict: Not proven, Verdict Comments: Assoilzied, Sentence: Assoilzied and dismissed Previous convictions: theft - Glasgow police court, 24 August 1896

Hugh Butler, married, Verdict: Not proven, Verdict Comments: Assoilzied, Sentence: Assoilzied and dismissed

So, Mary Ann must have committed a further offence after this date to show where she does in 1901...

Oh Dear !
Sadly, it looks like Catherine McCarron was also involved in this case of  housebreaking.

Missed that ref completely, Anne! McCann and McCann, of course  ::)

Monica

Added: Although that Catherine McCann is showing as a native of Glasgow :-\  Hugh too, but I can't easily find him earlier if he was born c. 1872 going by his age given in the 1900 trial papers.

And there they are...well done Anne  ;D

So that fits with the 1901 census entry for Catherine, matching addresses really from the trial papers

Catherine McCarn, 28, Rag Store Worker b. Glasgow
Address: 6 Muse Lane, Glasgow/Milton

Age out a bit...but what is new!

Don't we just love spelling variations  :-\

Possible death entry for mother Catherine:

1895   MCCANN/GILLESPIE CATHERINE - aged 58   DENNISTOUN   GLASGOW CITY/LANARK   644/03 2258

Couple of options for Bernard after 1881, with further spelling variations on the surname.
