R.X.O.K.A. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
« on: Thursday 28 July 16 16:41 BST (UK) »
My father in law served with the R.W.F. during WWII, posted to R.X.O.K.A. on the 2nd. January 1945. On the 3rd January he was enbarked from the U.K. for service overseas, disembarked T.O.S. India.
What does R.X.O.K.A. and T.O.S. mean ?
Thank you ,
Brian

TOS    means Taken on Strength

RXOKA     I think   was a random coded  expression for the batch   of people being posted  or shipped overseas.

Other  people on rootschat  have referred to a five character  alpha  group of letters   for people being posted overseas.

Brian, did you get these from his service record?

If so, a list of general abbreviations is usually included with the service record - have you checked the list? *

Are you able to provide a scan of the image so we can see it in context, for example, of it is is a list of other abbreviations, or under a heading.

Other  people on rootschat  have referred to a five character  alpha  group of letters   for people being posted overseas.

It would be useful if you could provide a link to this thread (or threads) for Brian.

*added: I checked my list and that abbreviation does not appear on it.

T.O.S...I found Traffic Operations System or Terms of Service  ::)

I am not sure the letters were random, and I am not sure they were only five letters long.   It is possible that "R" represented the word Royal, and in the same way that T.O.S. are the initials for the words Taken on Strength, so too R.X.O.K.A. may refer to the initials in a five worded expression.

 http://ww2talk.com/forums/page/Databases/abbreviations.html?sort_col=field_24&sort_order=asc&per_page=1000&st=1000

T.O.S. has same meaning in Australian Military abbreviations   = Taken on Strength ... so put into a Unit that needed the skills that that person had already obtained....

http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-asstd/abbreviations.htm

As an aside, may I mention that for example S.D.  can be abbreviation for a Secret Document and it can also be abbreviation for Service Dress .... so it depends on the context.   :)

Perhaps our OP could post a snip  :)

Is the abbreviation hand written or typed?

It might be useful to have  more information about the context.

Added: I see JM is also asking about context. ;)

The word Xenodochial may be the "X" meaning "friendly" if they were Allies but I know nothing about war in terms  ::)

Brian does say:

.... posted to R.X.O.K.A. .....

implying it might be a place, as in posted to Africa.
Or
posted to do something, as in posted to undertake training

(And probably other things I haven't thought of)  :)

Not right, but these are the closest I could find:

ROTA - Release Other Than Attack
ROTC – Reserve Officer Training Corps
ROTP - Regular Officer Training Plan; or Reserve Officer Training Program
