What a complicated family this is turning out to be!

June 1976 has a variety of marriages including John Ansell to Doris Finch or Ansell. It also has Doris Finch to Albert Alley.

However I'm pretty sure they are the same couple and that John Ansell was also Albert Alley as we have the following deaths

Albert J V Alley
Born 15 June 1908
died June 1982
Worthing

John Ansell
Born 15 June 1908
Died June 1982
Worthing

There is no birth of an Albert Alley in 1908 but ther is a John Ansell born then.

Blimey ! yes I think this might be quite complicated lol. Thank you both for the information.

I only knew of my grandad's sister because she was mentioned in a family obituary in the newspaper 😊 And I finally got her marriage certificate from her 1st marriage.

I wonder why they had different names ? This could be an interesting search .....

I have to agree he is the same person.

Maybe something simple like his mother remarried and Alley was a step surname.

Even stranger, you will have to look for yourself as it's in the 1911, but there is an Alley child with exactly the same names but born two years before the one who died in 1982. Too much of a coincidence?

I can understand if there was a remarriage changing a surname, but unusual not to use at least one of his first names. Why the different birth as well? A family secret to  be uncovered I think!  ;D ;D

I wonder if that is the one from 1911, with Allez being transcribed as Alley very easy to do as a z and y were written in much the same way? If so, he probaby has nothing to do with this family apart from the coincidences with initials.

If so, we are still no nearer finding out why either John Ansell changed his name from Albert Alley or vice versa!

Just noticed:

Albert JAMES V Allez died June quarter 1982 Portsmouth
Albert JOHN V Alley died June quarter 1982 Worthing
John Ansell died June quarter 1982 Worthing

So I think we can ignore the Allez, it is just a big coincidence. It also explains why John called himself John!

This is a possible. I think that Alfred John Alley's father was Alfred Alley born 1873. There is no death of an Alfred Alley but there is this death:

ALFRED ANSELL
Birth year   1873
Age   67
Death year   1940 4th quarter
WORTHING
Volume   2B
Page   940

So perhaps the whole Alley family changed their name to Ansell?

I found this by chance and I know the thread is quite old.

I reached the same conclusion that Albert John Victor Allez b 15/6/1908 in St Helier, Jersey is one and the same person as John Ansell (same birth date) who died in Worthing in 1982. I am a descendent of AJV Allez on the Jersey side of the family and what became of AJV has always been a but of a mystery. My late father tried to research this and came up with Army records in the name of Ansell but then a full stop.

The Allez family did not change their name en masse to Ansell, that much I do know but I am trying to piece some other information together. Unfortunately all of the people who would have known AJV when he was in Jersey are now dead.

I believe that what happened is that AJV left the island just before the occupation and elected to serve in the army under a more "English" name. After WW2 he didn't revert to AJV Allez and made a new life for himself. I am sure there is more to it than that and I wouldn't mind knowing!

As you rightly say there was another Albert James Allez (1906 - 1982?) and this can confuse thing. As far as I can see he was AJV's cousin.

I do have some more information but it's not for publication on a public internet forum.
