Thomas Winter and Grandson Hiram Aston
« on: Friday 29 July 16 19:23 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am puzzled by an entry in the 1891 census showing my great grandfather Hiram Aston as the 19 year old grandson of Thomas Winter. It is the Welsh census for Bedwelty/Tredegar.

Thomas Winter is born in Merthyr and married to Mary (who is born in Blakeney, Glos). Hiram is also born in Blakeney. The puzzle is that I have Hiram's mother as Ann Miles not Winter.

What am I missing?

Thanks

Stephen

Hi Stephen, I think the 19 year old Hiram is on the 1891 not 1881 so born c 1872 in 1881 he is with a widowed Ann Aston 42 b Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire
Census Ref RG11/2523/80/5

Is this correct?

There's a possible marriage Jun qtr 1880 Bedwelty for Thomas WINTER and Mary Ann MILES.

Would Mary Ann be your Ann's mother?

Hi keyboard86 and Maureen

Yes, I checked back and it is the 1891 census.

I am not sure an 1880 marriage date works for Mary Ann to be Hiram's grandmother but perhaps she was step-Grandmother or maybe Thomas Wnter was step grandfather.

Hello Stephen

So could Ann Miles be the illegitimate daughter of Mary Miles?

Ann Miles married Joseph Aston in 1859.

On the 1881 Census she states born Ebbw Vale, which would tie-in with the Monmouth Workhouse Baptism. However, on her marriage she says her father is James Miles??
