I'm not sure the Monmouth birth is the one we want - she says Ebbw Vale in one place and Llanethly another time - presumably the Llanelly between Brynmawr and Abergavenny. Neither are particularly close to Monmouth

Assuming Mary Ann Winter is Ann Miles' mother then she would have been 16 when Ann was born.

Mary Ann is significantly older than her husband Thomas Winter. Thomas was only 5 when his Ann was born so he is clearly her stepfather and not her father.

I am intrigued that Mary Ann was born in Blakeney.

The fact we can't find James or Mary Ann before 1861, and Ann being in East Dean in 1851 makes me suspicious that she was born out of wedlock and sent back to Mary Ann's family to be raised, although her having the Miles surname does suggest otherwise.  Very oddly, one of the sons of the James family she's visiting in 1851 later has an Aston lodging with him as an adult (but this Aston was born in Staffordshire)

There was a lot of migration between the Dean and South Wales as the coal seams were opened up

Hi the family with Hiram aged 9 with widowed mother Ann, are this is 1861:-

Joseph ARTON ( Transcribed) 22 b East Dean
Ann 21 Monmouthshire
Albert 11 months b East Dean
Residing at Blakeney Hill, East Dean
Census Ref RG09/1756/4/5

Prerty sure this one is right. Albert was Hiram's oldest brother according to other sources.

The 1881 census has a Thomas Wnter married to a Mary Ann living in Tredegar. Mary Ann is 10 years older than Thomas which ties in with other info and they could have been married in 1880. They are both shown as born in Glamorganshire which is correct for Thomas (born Merthyr) but wrong for Mary Ann (supposedly born in Blakeney, Glos).

I do think it is the right Mary Ann though.

Thanks to Mabel's  detective work....I think I'm seeing a glimmer of hope. :)

On 1851 A*try- take a look at Mays Ane GADES b1822 born Blokery, Gloucestershire.

The image says Mary Ann MILES.

Mary Ann JAMES spinster (father Adam JAMES -note that Ann MILES is with the JAMES family in 1851) marries James MILES widower occ:Patten maker father William MILES occ:Patten maker Oct.3 1846 Llanelli Breconshire.
....

With Mary Ann in 1851 is a Richard MILES born 1834 Llauley(sic), Breconshire, Wales.

In 1841 there's a James MILES age 38 with wife Elizabeth(30) son Richard age 8 and daughter Anne born 1839 Llanelly Crickhowell. ???

Good thing I was looking for young Richard. I never would have caught Mary Ann either.
