Where is Mangertoun or Mangerton?
« on: Friday 29 July 16 19:48 BST (UK) »
As I continue my ongoing search for Renwick ancestors, I've found the location of Mangertoun as an abode or farm??  Does anyone know more?  Also I found the word on SconlandsPlaces but couldn't access the information because it's a pay for view site.  Is there someone with access to ScotlandsPlaces who would be willing to look it up for me?  Thank you ahead of time for all help.

Nearest I can find is Mangerton Castle in Roxburghshire which was a seat of the Armstrong family ( general google search). Seems to have been located near Newcastleton.

The National Library of Scotland has a maps website which gives you free access to old maps of Scotland. For the 19th century a good start is to click on SERIES MAPS, then select the older Ordnance Survey 6" to a mile map. There is a slider which allows you to compare the area with other maps including current satellite images.

It's about a mile south of Newcastleton, just to the east of Liddel Water. As IsobelW says, Mangerton Tower was originally the seat of the Armstrongs (from the 1300s) but it was laid waste in 1602 and is now a ruin. Francis Scott (who became Earl of Buccleuch) got the lands in 1629 and passed them on to one of his sons, Francis Scott of Mangerton. There is still a Mangerton Farm and Mr Google will show you photos of a very attractive farmhouse and also a Mangerton Mill if you ask him nicely.

Thank you for all the replies.  I'm encouraged to know that Mangerton Castle is in Roxburgh county so I'll keep looking further.  The Earl of Buccleuch is interesting, as my great grandfather and even my grandfather (before immigrating here) were mole-catchers on the estate.  Also very helpful to know about the National Library of Scotland.

(sorry, that didn't work ... you can zoom in - it's towards the bottom right of the map)
