Thomas Cook
« on: Saturday 30 July 16 00:58 BST (UK) »
Thomas Cook b c 1836 Paddington Middlesex believed to have served in the military & possibly stationed in Ireland at some stage.  In 1881 census he is residing in Hammersmith Middlesex with wife Ellen & children Thomas, John R & Ellen.  Where can I find any records of his service? Thank you

Search for their marriage date,   and then obtain the marriage certificate,  I suggest.

I see his wife was born in Ireland, is that why you think he may have served there. Did he marry in England or Ireland.

FindMyPast has Army records for that period but not many mention birth places.

Thanks rosie - they married in UK in 1873 - I thought they may have met if he was stationed in Ireland.  Dont have a sub to FindMyPast. Can army records be sourced online other than FindMyPast?

I am not sure what military records Ancestry have.  Some local libraries have access to FindMyPast as well as Ancestry.
It may help people who are looking if we have his fathers name & occupation

There are literally hundreds of entries on both Ancestry and FindMyPast for soldiers by the name of Thomas (or T or Thos or variants) Cook for the period in which he may have been serving. However, in line with Rosie's post, without additional information, finding one that can positively be identified as him is difficult.  Detailed service records for those men who left without a pension before 1883 were routinely destroyed and though many medal rolls survive, they have only names.  The National Archives have some records, see the guide at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/british-army-soldiers-up-to-1913/ and another at http://www.genguide.co.uk/source/army--soldiers-documents-pension-amp-service-records--other-ranks-before-1914-military/22/ from which you will see that the least one needs to know is his regiment.  Ireland as a clue doesn't help much in that as a part of UK at that time, being stationed there was as common as being stationed in Aldershot.
Sounds negative I'm afraid but a name only really doesn't give enough to go on in the area of military records.
