Air/Aire/Airey/Ayre/Hair/Hare etc
« on: Sunday 31 July 16 11:26 BST (UK) »
I am looking into Robert Aire.  According to census returns and at his death in 1890 he consistently claims to have been born in 1809 in Colne.  I cannot find a bpt for a Robert in 1809, but I can find the bpt of three Hair children, all on the same day 8/3/1809 (Wednesday) at St Bartholomew's, Colne.

Robert born 5/11/1807 son of Ann spinster
Pertheana born 18/10/1808 dau of John and Betty
Pertheana born 29/1/1809 day of Jonas and Grace

Ann, John and Jonas appear to be the children of John a weaver, and Isobel (nee Hodgson)
Jonas 1770-1819
Sally 14/5/1774 Colne
Robert born 10/8/1779 bpt 5/3/1800 Colne
Ann (Air) born 10/5/1782 bpt 26/9/1782 Kildwick, Yorkshire
Henry born 16/6/1784 bpt 5/3/1800 Colne
John born 25/10/1787 bpt 5/3/1800 Colne

I am trying to confirm whether my Robert is the illegitimate son of Ann born 1807 bpt 1809, and if he is, do I have any hope of finding who his father was?  Ann may also have had a second illegitimate child Jane born 15/7/1806, bpt 28/12/1806 Colne.

Are there any non conformist records in the Colne area that I may have missed?

All/any suggestions and observations most welcome.  Many thanks
Valerie

Thank you so much Radccliff.

Yes, I had found Ann's subsequent marriage to William Sunderland, but no, and what a surprise, I hadn't found the burial of Pethania.  Goodness me, three illegitimate children.  I wonder if they all had the same father!?  Was this burial in the St Bart's register at Colne?

Yes Pethania's burial was at St Bart's

As in the census Robert always gives his age as consistent with a birth in 1809 but as the census was usually taken March/April of the year he could well have been born anytime between March/April 1808 and March April 1809 which would not fit with the November baptism in 1808

Baptism: 8 Mar 1809 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
Robert Hair - Son of Ann Hair, Spinster
    Born: 5 Nov 1807
    Abode: Colne

Not sure if this is any help but Ann seems to have died in 1814

Marriage: 16 Aug 1814 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
William Sunderland - Widower, this Chapelry
Ann Aire - (X), Spinster, this Chapelry
    Witness: Robt Bulcock; James Ellis
Married by Banns by: Jno Dunderdale, Curate Assist
    Register: Marriages 1813 - 1819, Page 65, Entry 195
    Source: LDS Film 1471065

Marriage: 14 Dec 1826 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
William Sunderland - (X), Weaver, Widower, this Chapelry
Ellen Sharp - (X), this Chapelry
Witness: William Townend, (X); James Ellis
Married by Banns by: J Henderson

Burial: 3 Feb 1814 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
Ann Sunderland - wife of William Sunderland
    Age: 30
    Abode: North Hall

edit - probably 1st wife (Ann Smith?) I was looking at the witnesses but looking furth James Ellis is consistently a witness to marriage s so was probably just the parish clerk

Many thanks for all the info.

Does anyone know whether there are Quarter Sessions records etc for Colne which might include Bastardy Orders and the like?

Alternatively I am beginning to wonder whether there was more than one Ann Aire!
