McVitie's Biscuits

I understand that McVitie's Biscuits started in Dumfries before moving to Edinburgh about 1830. although it is a long shot I wondered if anyone had any information or knew of any book dealing with the subject. Any information would be gratefully received.

There's a book "The business Diaries of Sir Alexander Grant" although that covers from when he joined the company.  It's out of print now but you may find a copy on amazon if interested.  Alexander Grant was my grt grandfather's first cousin.

many thanks for the replies to date. I am interested in the Dumfries connection mainly but information on the families is also welcome

have found out a lot of information thanks to help so far.Am having difficulty in finding the date of death of William McVitie . Have established that he was born in 1772 and married Jean Green. He was on the 1841 Census as living in Edinburgh but entry in National Dictionary of Biography stated that he and his wife returned to Dumfries. He does not appear on the Census for 1851 in Edinburgh or Dumfries and the trail has gone cold.
