COMPLETED:Point Canten - ? Contin
« on: Monday 01 August 16 02:58 BST (UK) »
Good morning from Australia.

I have a possible ancestor Margaret Cameron, daughter of Kenneth and Christina/Christie/Christy/Christian who arrived in NSW in 1839.

It is said that she is from Point Cantin. I'm certain it should be Contin, but what could the Point be.

Jamjar, there's a place called Porin up Strathconon west from Contin, try this site with the map & aerial pic, on the same page,

http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm

Enter Strathpeffer in the searchbox, Contin is SW of there.

Skoosh.

Thank you both, will have to get onto the computer to see it properly. Not so good on the iPad.

From what I can see Porin and Contin are two separate places, though. As in Porin isn't in Contin shire as such. Am I right?

They are both in Ross & Cromarty - try this link, it gives the address as Porin, Contin:

Contin is a small village -driven through more times than I can count (always keep to the speed limit!) - but the large rural parish was named after it.

Jamjar,  Porin was a farm settlement, it was cleared of people by its Balfour lairds in 1850,  Contin is Parish & village in Ross-shire, there are certainly Cameron's listed as Strathconnon tenants onUpper Strathconon on here,

http://her.highland.gov.uk/hbsmrgatewayhighland/DataFiles/LibraryLinkFiles/160179.pdf

If Porin is incorrect the link at least will explain the condition of the people generally in that area. The Lower Strathconon survey is also available.

Brilliant, thank you.  ;D

I'll definitely settle for the name as Porin, Contin, Ross and Cromarty.
