Patrick Martin, Drogheda
« on: Monday 01 August 16 04:37 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I've previously posted some questions on RootsChat regarding my wife's paternal great grandfather Jeremiah Jeffrey, who came from Cambridgeshire, England, and who married a Sophia Martin in Drogheda in 1872.

I'm now trying to discover more about Sophia's family.

Sophia was born in Drogheda in 1849. Her father was Patrick Martin, born 1830, and her mother was Eliza Thompson, born about 1820. I recently discovered that Sophia had a sister called Eliza, born 1851 or 1852.

In the Griffith's Valuation of Co. Louth 1854, there's a reference to a Patrick Martin living at 16 Hand Street, Drogheda. This appears to be the only Patrick Martin recorded as resident in the town at that time.

What would be the best way to ascertain whether this Patrick Martin is Sophia's father or somebody unrelated?

Many thanks.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.

St. Peter's Drogheda RC parish, 5th (January 1853), Eliza of Patrick Martin & Elizabeth Thompson (right page, 10th entry down from top):

I got the impression bobcollier already has the baptisms and now wants to prove or not that the man in GV at Hand St. is Sophia's father.

"...recently discovered that Sophia had a sister called Eliza, born 1851 or 1852..."  not having year so might not have Baptisms?

Perhaps he can confirm. I posted on the basis of him not being sure of the year for Eliza, not mentioning Mary and now also not mentioning Thomas:

Thos. Martin of Pattk & Eliza Thomson (left page, just over half way down from top):

I agree gaffy

I can see births from 1843 to 1853
1843 Mary; 1840 Thomas; 1849 Sophia; 1853 Thomas
but no marriage

To match this family to the Griffiths' valuations would be difficult without points of reference e.g. specific address, occupation, etc.

Especially as there are at least seven couples with the male named Patrick Martin having children in Drogheda in the 1830s and 1840s which would put them in the correct age grouping to be listed; and this is not considering bachelors

Females as mother on baptisms named Catherine MURPHY, Catherine SMYTH, Catherine McEVOY, Mary BURN, Rose McKEOWN/McKEON, Mary KIRWAN & Bess O'NEILL at least
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
Byrne [Carthy], Keeffe/ Germaine, Butler/ McDermott, Giblin/ Lally, Dolan
Toole, Doran; Dowling, Grogan/ Reilly, Burke; Warren, Kidd [Lawless]/ Smith, Scally; Mangan, Rodgers/ Fahy, Calday; Staunton, Miller
Further generations:
Brophy Coleman Eathorn(e) Fahy Fitzpatrick Geraghty Haverty Keane Keogh Nowlan Rowe Walder

If correct, then Thomas bap. 1840 and Mary bap. 1843 may also prompt reconsideration of the OP's comment '... Her father was Patrick Martin, born 1830 ...'
