2nd Battn Black Watch-Joseph Burns

Good Morning,

Thank you for any help with my Burns family from Glasgow. Arthur and Elizabeth Burns had 9 children in Glasgow. I have them in 1891 and 1901 census. Their son Philip Burns born 1889 is my great great grandfather- he died in WWI. I am looking for his brother Joseph Burns born 1885. The Burns men were coal miners but also served in military. There is a  Joseph Burns, of the right age, who died serving in the 2nd Battn Black Watch, of "Fever WYD" in 1909. Any help finding out if this is my Joseph Burns I would be most grateful.

Thank you very much. Was able to get some help from the RootsChat Lanarkshire forum and found this:

There is a Register of Soldiers effects entry which confirms that this Joseph is the son of Arthur and Elizabeth with Elizabeth being shown as his next of kin. Payments are made in 1910 to family members including father Arthur, brothers Andrew, Arthur, Phillip and William and sisters Emily and Elizabeth. (Lizzie). There is a note that his mother had received a payment by personation and fraud and also that the mother's illegitimate son Andrew Morgan had received a payment and that Joseph had no brother called Andrew.

Got it! That is the Burns family. So far no sign of Joseph Burns' military record with the Black Watch. He was only 23 when he died but maybe there is a record somewhere. Thank you very much, Barbara

Lucky he is in the 'Soldiers Effects' as, before WW1, they did not keep soldier's records. Although you should check FIndmypast just in case.
