Ellis, Hughes or Graydon familes, Newtown, Roundwood Newcastle
« on: Wednesday 03 August 16 23:02 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I've hit a bit of a brick wall with regards to a couple of family threads, and was wondering if anyone can help.

My great grandfather is John Hughes, found in Knockraheen in Co Wicklow in the 1901 census. I have his marriage to Ellen Graydon in 1905. His father is James. I've different dates for his year of birth through his marriage cert, 2 censuses, his death cert and his gravestone. Each giving a different age and adding to the general confusion finding his birth cert.

Ellen was born in 1887 to Robert Graydon and Bridget Ellis, and are also from around the Knockraheen area. She seems to be a servant in someone's house in 1901. Robert and Bridget married in 1883 in Newtownmountkennedy. Robert's father is Richard, and Bridget's Andrew.

I found a baptism in Kilquade for a Robert with a father Richard (and mother Marie Anne Warlock who I also can't find anything more about despite the name) in 1845. I suspect Robert and or Bridget are dead by 1901.

I can't find a Bridget Ellis born to Andrew Ellis. I found an Andrew that goes by Edward somewhere, and I can't for the life of my find that link again. If Edward is correct I think I have that line, Bridget would be born in 1856 to Edward Ellis and Bridget Kavanagh...but its all guess work, and dodgy reasoning.

So, really I'm struggling to get past these blocks. I can't be certain of John Hughes' birthdate therefore can't find his mother's maiden name. Can't find the Graydons. And can't find Andrew Ellis.

Any help would be gratefully received

Hi Daithi,

sorry about the delay in replying.

Thanks for the links. They have some potential, especially with the sponsor for the son Andrew being a Hughes.  The problem with it is following it up with a search on Roots Ireland, I can find 6 baptisms for Children of Andrew and Ellen between 1958 and 1969, but no Bridget.

Actually I'd love it if it was Andrew and Ellen, as they married on Dec 26, the same day as my parents :)

Hi Daithi

Margaret in 58 says Wicklow, nothing noted in address. (Witnesses Michael Byrne Elizabeth Murphy)
Ellen in 60 is the same (witnesses George Waters, Elizabeth Brown)
James in 62 is Kilquade, although, the mother is listed as Heden (Witnesses William and Bridget Marks)
Andrew 65 is Kilquade, Address Prospect, mother Elanor Hayden (witnesses Thomas Hughes, Esther Poland)
Anna 67, also Kilquade and Prospect (witnesses Patrick Doyle, Catherine Kelly)
William 69, Kilquade, address Prospect, Mother Ellen Headan (witnesses Owen and Maria Short)

Witnesses a bit interesting as the name Elizabeth Murphy pops up in 1871 as the name of mother to a John Hughes, and Thomas Hughes, because he's a Hughes.

Waters and Short are still a common enough name in Newtownmountkennedy/Newcastle.

Just to say that there is an earlier baptism of Patrick in 1854
mother is shown as Eleanor Ellis

Marriage of Andrew ELLIS and Ellinor HEADEN was in Glendalough on Jan 26 1846
both were of Annaghgoulan; no parents are shown; sponsors Stephen & Anne BEGLEY & Peter MAGUIRK

There are no baptisms that I can see that fill the gap years between 1846 and 1858 which was the period of the famine and so may not have been recorded or maybe missed by transcription error - you'd have to go through actual registers to see at www.nli.ie

Thanks Myluck,

FindMyPast actually has it for Dec 26 1845 in transcript, but the image clearly shows it in Jan 46.

Might have a slow trawl through the microfilm
