Ravald Street, Salford in 1871.
« on: Saturday 06 August 16 15:36 BST (UK) »
Some of my ancestors lived at 25 Ravald Street, Salford in 1871.

According to the 1871 census, Hiram Greenwood age 25, born in 1846 in Hulme, Lancashire, his wife Mary Ann, born Roche in 1848 in Dublin, Ireland, age 23, their daughter Rebecca age 3 born 1868, and Mary Ellen age 1 born 1870.

Their daughter Rebecca died age 3, and soon afterwards they moved away from Salford, to the countryside, where the rest of their children were born and survived.

I wondered what part of Salford Ravald Street was, and if it was near the famous Angel Meadows, and what the living conditions were like there?

Hiram Greenwood was born in Hulme, and his mother, Bridget Ward, was also Irish.  So he was moving away from where he had lived all his life.

I also found that Hiram's father, Thomas Greenwood, and his wife Bridget Ward lived at 30 Angel Street, the address given for both on their marriage certificate in 1846.

Was Angel Street anything to do with Angel Meadows?

There's a similar query on Ancestry boards, dated 2011?

http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/51218/mb.ashx?pnt=1

Thanks, I had found that on google, and had clicked through some of the answers, but there didn't seem to be much information there, other than that it was obviously a working class area.

When I read social history books about Manchester, especially Irish immigrants as two of my ancestors were, it seems there was dire poverty and extreme multi family occupation of one room, but whenever I look at census information of my working class ancestors living in and around Manchester, they always seem to be one family to one house, with one or even both parents in work.  I just don't picture them living in some dire slum.

My 3Gt Grandparents lived in Ravald St for around 10/15 years in the 1850/60's.

I get the impression that it was a typical working class street, with the residents having fairly good jobs, far removed from the streets in Angel Meadow.

He was a Journeyman Mechanic, which I think was quite a reasonable job, before becoming a Milk Dealer up to his death.
