Seeking a father for William May
« on: Sunday 07 August 16 13:33 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for William May's father, details:
William May was christened 1 Jul 1815 at Chiddingstone Kent (christening record does not mention the fathers name, so assume he was illegitimate).
Mother was Hannah May - born around 1779 at Cuckfield Sussex (1851 Census - Gun Wharf, Chatham).
Thanks,
Rob.

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Does he mention a father on his marriage record?
Or is there any mention in Bastardy Orders?

Failing that, there isn't a lot you can do - his name will remain a secret! ::)

By the way - you posted this under "Kent Completed Lookup Requests"?
I have assumed it isn't complete! ;D

In 1851 Hannah states she was a widow.  If that is correct you would expect a father to have been named or William was born after Hannah's husband died.

I wonder if William named a father when he married (he might have invented one though).

Hi

Welcome to rootschat

Did William marry Mercy Burfoot in 1842 - Croydon. If he did the marriage does not name a father for him

Looking for a father in Kent

Hi,
(re-posted since it was originally posted in the incorrect group)
I am looking for William May's father, details:
William May was christened 1 Jul 1815 at Chiddingstone Kent (christening record does not mention the fathers name, so assume he was illegitimate).
Mother was Hannah May - born around 1779 at Cuckfield Sussex (1851 Census - Gun Wharf, Chatham - Hannah says she was a window so probably married at some point).
Williams marriage certificate does not mention the fathers name.
Can anyone suggest anything, or look up records relating to illegitimate children in parish records in the area?
Thanks,
Rob.

Hi Rob

Welcome to Rootschat

I can't help with your look-up but if you discover that you have posted in the wrong place, please use the 'report to moderator' button at the bottom right of every post and leave us a message. We will then move the topic as soon as someone gets to the report.

As there have been replies on the other topic, I have merged this one with that and then moved it to the correct board.
