Birth Certificate Amendment
« on: Monday 08 August 16 17:46 BST (UK) »
I've just received a birth certificate. Box 7 reads:
"X the mark of Penelope Burn
Mother
(12) Occupier (the word occupier has been crossed out)
4 Edwards Court
Princess Street
Chester"

on the right hand side of box 10........has been written: "Twelve" with the initials of the registrar. The 12 obviously applies to the crossing out of "occupier" and inserting "mother"

Is the number 12 associated with this kind of amendment? If not, what does it mean?

Thanks

Possibly it have been the 12th initialled alteration in that volume of registrations? To make sure that no others were just inserted later?

The Registration  acts state that corrections of errors discovered, at the time of entry, before completion of the certificate are numbered and initialed in the right hand margin of the certificate, they have to be numbered, obviously to prevent someone coming along later and altering an entry. Therefore, in this case, the correction would have been made at the time it was entered and this is the 12th such correction in the register
