Daniel Wheeler born 1771
« on: Tuesday 09 August 16 17:30 BST (UK) »
Just wondered if anybody could help in a bit of research I'm doing. History books record that Daniel Wheeler, a notable Quaker, born in Mayfair London in 1771, moved to Sheffield (Handsworth Woodhouse) in the 1790s to join his sister who had become a Quaker. He married my 1st cousin 6x removed, Jane Brady. Just wondered if anybody could find out about Daniel's sister (like her name) and any other records for her. Both their parents, William and Sarah Wheeler, had died by 1783.

Hi Graham

I have looked at Daniels marriage entry in which he states his parents as William ( a wine merchant ) and Sarah.

On Anc* PCC Willls there is a Will for a William Wheeler ( a brandy dealer ) that he wrote on 18 July 1772, unfortunately doesn't name any of the children, just his wife Sarah, but their address : Conduit Street, St George Hanover Square. Probate : 30 Mar 1778.

There is also a Will for a Sarah Wheeler written 29 April 1783 of Lower Grosvenor Street St George Hanover Square. In it her estate is to be divided between her sons and daughters. Probate: 24 May 1784

Childrens names:

William BALL Wheeler
Barbara Wheeler
Charles Wheeler
Sarah Wheeler
Daniel Wheeler

Her executor was a Rev. Christopher Alderson of Tickhill Yorkshire, who married an Elizabeth BALL of Aston, so could be a relation possibly given son having the middle name Ball, see link

http://www.tickhillhistorysociety.org.uk/local_snippets_rev_Anderson.asp

So it would seem the sister could be Sarah or Barbara perhaps

EDIT: After reading all of the link and where the Reverend was in 1784 and the fact he was the executor of the Will, it seems to be all tying in together quite well, after finding the marriage below.

Hi

A marriage licence dated 21 April 1787 for a 30+ year old William Hoyland Gentleman of Handsworth York. to a BARBARA WHEELER aged 21 of Eckington Derbyshire, spinster.

Married 23rd April 1787 Eckington ~ the marriage record states she was of Handsworth, although this was a transcript, the licence was the actual document

Wonder if it's this sister

There's a bit in Edward H. Milligan's Biographical Dictionary of British Quakers in Commerce and Industry, in his article on William Hoyland, that adds some detail on Barbara. It reads (in part): "He married in 1787 Barbara Wheeler (1764-1829). Of the eight children recorded in Quaker registers, three sons and two daughters survived to adulthood. Barbara Wheeler had been brought up in the Established Church and (her parents having both died before she was out of her teens) she lived for a time with a family where she became 'unhappily entangled in the specious snares of scepticism and infidelity' (Testimony). When, however, at the age of 21, she visited friends in Yorkshire, she came to see these views as 'the innovations of folly, false philosophy and vain deceit' (ibid. She resumed church-going and, as she was not a Friend, the marriage was of neccesity 'before the priest'; for this William Hoyland was disowned by Balby MM. Their first years of married life were at 'Myrtle Bank', Handsworth Woodhouse, east of the town. In 1790, while in Sheffield itself and unable to get to her usual church, she attended Sheffield meeting and, later becoming convinced of Friends' principles and method of worship, was accepted into membership in 1792, her husband being reinstated shortly afterwards. Her gift in the vocal ministry was acknowledged by the monthly meeting." She moved to Bradford a few years after her husband's death.

Milligan cites the Testimony of Brighouse MM concerning Barbara Hoyland, in 'Testimonies concerning ministers deceased', v.350-3

On a personal note, William Frazer Hoyland, son of William and Barbara Hoyland, married my 1st cousin 5x removed, Hannah Walker.

Hi Ben

That's a good thing to have, and at the right time as well.

Looks like the correct family then, that's a relief :)

Hello Graham, Barbara Hoyland was my ancester, somewhere we have her diary in which she describes Danaiel Wheeler's dealings with Tasr Alexander I and I even still have his clock dating from 1790s.
What a wonderful resource this is.
