The gravestone has 1850 on it, which according to the write up is wrong,  but it is a good find, then the family trees on Ancestry might be wrong

There is something stranger about HARRIET(T)

A good majority of family trees on  l ancestry link her up to the siblings listed on 1851, the only 2 that family search haven't got listed for baptisms are Obidiah born 1843/1844 and Harriet(t) born circa 1850

It also looks as if Harriet(t) emigrated quite early on, I can't find any shipping records so far, so where do we go from here as so many are sure she is related to the 1851 siblings, possibly travelled out in the 1860's sometime, would she have gone alone?

I am totally confused being as I thought I had found her

Louisa Maud,
Delighted that you are helping the Harriet Halstead search.
Just so happens we are having a Halstead gathering today...with a 3rd cousin related to Emily Halstead and we are trying to sought out the whereabouts of Harriet.
I will let you know what we have discovered (if anything) after afternoon tea.

Are you acquainted with the Halstead clan ?
James Halstead a brother of Harriet and Emily sponsored many of his siblings to venture to Australia. Most of the families settled at Lavender Bay, North Sydney and were ferry boat builders, sea faring Master Mariners. They lived about the North Sydney area and had many descendants.
I have asked for research help over the years from rootschat..it is indeed a wealth of information and generosity,

Thank you very much for the interest and help,
Christine

Emily was aged 54 when she went to Canada with son Charles Beach, looks like her destination was Winnipeg, surely at that age she would not have gone without expecting to meet with family or good friends that had gone ahead.

Do you have the article on the inquest of Samuel Halstead, The Chelmsford Chronicle has the better article, states the inquest was at The White Horse Inn evidence given by daughter Mary Ann. Died of a heart attack, leaves a wife and eight children the wife expecting another any day.
Its on ancestry wasn't sure if it was your tree.

Its a pity they stopped baptizing the children after 1842.

Hi Christine
No I am not acquainted with the Halsted/Halstead family, I am just a Rootschatter that helps out from time to time, plus if I get stuck I asked for myself, it is a great site where mostly mysteries can be solved , but not in every case.

Some Rootschatters have a wealth of knowledge, they are a great team even if I may say so myself

I am just finding Harriet(t) a mystery so far

Enjoy your get together

Happy hunting

Louisa Maud

I notice you started seeking the HALSTEAD/HALSTED family way back in 2008, how things have progressed as more info comes to  light

If Harriet(t) died after a census has anyone thought of checking on that census, it might give her place of birth and even date of birth but it would need to be put out on another board I am sure

You most likely have this but
Samuel was buried 14/09/1851
Mary Anne 29/10/1851

But also on the BMD I the same quarter as Mary is a male Halsted buried, no Christian name, can't find a birth reg or baptism for him, is it possible that Emily was a twin and the boy died at birth or was stillborn and he was registered at burial but nowhere else.

There may be a connection to the Tillbrook family as the 1851 census shows a Jos Tillbrook aged 70 born 1781 in Salcott Essex as a lodger with the Wicks family.

Just a thought Susanna may have kept Emily as she would have been a newborn and Susanna a daughter Louisa the same age by the 1861 census so Emily may have been a nurse child

Just had another thought, there was a thing called the Children's Friends Society in the 19th century, it was to send orphans and poor children to the USA and Australia/New Zealand, I notice a lot of the family seems to end up in Aussie could this be how they got there.

Thank you to Jolee for entering into the search with louisa maud and others.
After hours of combined searching yesterday with ancestry and freebmd we are none the wiser about Harriet Halstead.
But we did do a wealth of research on her younger sister Emily Halstead who had married James Beech/Beach,a widower in 1883.in London
After many children to various fathers, Emily Beach emigrates to Canada 17th August 1905 with her youngest son Charles,.She dies in Winnipeg 19th December 1924.

About Emily...

Sorry, but I cannot spot that woman anywhere in Canada.

If you have the correct death record... it should be on here:
