I just remembered that in one of the later censuses, one of the children shows born in Scotland. Has your friend looked into that. There may be more information there.

This is really helpful, my friend doesn't o Family History I do it all for them and then they see the results. I have Family Treemaker and I can sync it to Ancestry. That is when Carol my friend gets to look at it.
I must recheck the census that I've got saved on my P.C. for the person born in Scotland

It is 1861 974/25/6

George Spring (son) shows as born Birmingham and his brother William, Scotland.

However for George
1851 Huntingdonshire
1871 March, Cambridge

Not sure if William is anywhere else  ::)
