Places to visit

Hi All,

I have rented a cottage in Keith for a week and intend to visit places where my forebears were born/married/died or mentioned in censuses, I would appreciate any thoughts/pointers any posters can provide to help me along the way.

I have events in Archiestown, Knockando, Abelour, Rothes, Grange, Cawdor, Lumsden, Auchindoir, Forres, Elgin, New Machar and probably more places that I can't remember at the moment.

George, I'm not too sure what information you are seeking, but if it relates to locations, all these places are easy to find on a map.

If you are looking for other information, all I would advise is that you try to locate each church, grave and address before you go - this should make your search easier once you get there. Prepare as much as you can beforehand. Presumably you will have your own vehicle?

NLS has access to older maps that may be useful.

Good suggestion ev - those NLS maps are wonderful.

Leading on from this I was going to suggest that George may find it useful to use the "side by side" feature (which compares the old map with the current map), however sadly this feature is not available in close up for Archiestown. You have to zoom out to see the modern map, and you lose all the valuable detail.

Thanks for the replies,

I checked the side by side map and it zooms in quite a lot but only with the road maps not the satellites.

I searched around previously using Google Earth and I am quite familiar with the locations that are still there, however when Looking for Grange or Auchindoir or Kearn the search was not successful, hopefully the side by side map will help as it should still have the old places.

George I could find Auchidoun not Auchidoir - is that the same place?

I think any anomalies with place names are what you need to sort out before your trip. 

Some of the place names may need further investigation. Some may be farms and not marked on maps, or only marked on the most detailed of maps.

It depends on what the names relate to and what date - eg a bmd event or a census location for example. Some detective work will probably be able to track them down.

Do you have a list of those places you can't find? If you let us know the places and some dates we can try to spot them for you. Dates can sometimes help as we can look on older maps for example, and if the place is an address from the census - tell us the family name and which census, we might be able to find them.

I was thinking the same thing myself, are Auchidoun and Auchindoir the same, could be I misread the handwriting on the document, on one document I have Lumsden, Auchindoir and on another document I have Manse of Auchindoir, in the parish of Auchindoir & Kearn, Aberdeenshire. Maybe I will have to travel a bit further afield, (good job I will have my own transport), and maybe I should post a message on the Aberdeenshire forum as well.

Hi George,

If you go to  www.scottish-places.info/parishes/parhistory322.html  (hope I got all this correct) you will find details of Parish of Auchindor  and Kearn.

It contains the village of Lumsden and is 3 ish miles NNW of Alford.

Lots of info on this site.

Hope you enjoy your visit to Aberdeenshire and have time to look around some of the little interesting places especially on the Moray Firth. I am just back from Portsoy where we holiday often so I know the area reasonably well.

The Falconer Museum in Forres High Street had genealogical information when I was there.

I would also recommend going to see the Moray Firth dolphins.
