2 Brixham Queries
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 22:26 BST (UK) »
I have two questions
Firstly I've come to a bit of a dead end trying to track down my maternal grandfathers early life and parentage as it would appear he and his siblings were born out of wedlock.
He possibly spent some of his childhood at the BSO Boys' Home in Brixham when his mother married a Mr Morey.
It would seem he was originally named Andrew Henry Salter on the 1911 census, his mother being Eliza Bessie Salter from Torbryan. He was known as Robert Andrew Salter born in July 1907

Secondly are there any employment records available relating to Berry Head Quarry as I believe my other grandfather worked there for a period of time - Percival Jack Thomas Smith dob 13.5.1915

If his birth cert does not show a fathers name - your only hope is if he has named a father on his marriage cert.  However - if he gives his fathers surname as Salter - it is fictitious.

I
It would seem he was originally named Andrew Henry Salter on the 1911 census, his mother being Eliza Bessie Salter from Torbryan. He was known as Robert Andrew Salter born in July 1907

Maybe Andrew's name was misentered I  1911???

His birth reg reads
FreeBMD
Andrew Robert Salter July/Aug/Spt qtr 1907 Totnes reg district

His name is Andrew Robert Salter on his Navy records too.

Also it looks like his Grandmother was b.Torbryan and his mother was b Totnes

You could look for a baptism record to see if father's name is included or purchase the birth certificate to see if there is a name entered there - in majority of cases the father's name is left blank
He had a younger brother named Henry so possibly Andrew's middle name was entered (in error)as that of his brother.

Hi

What was the original starting point for your query?
His marriage?
A birth certificate? Whose?

What documentation do you have?

Why are Rootshatters making disguised remarks about data on 1911 census?

Did you notice that somebody has reported a full name for her mother on the 1911 entry?  Entry shows Hannah and amendment as Hannah Maria nee White

You could contact them to see what connection they have to the family
