Records in Pau France
« on: Thursday 11 August 16 01:06 BST (UK) »
I found this forum because someone had asked about records in Pau France. Unfortunately, the advice given doesn't cover the period I'm interested in. I'm looking for info on my 3rd and 4th great grandparents, specifically Henri Camou, born about 1830 and later emigrated to Mexico and his mother Marie Eugenie Baston, born about 1790 in Pau, France.

Are there any records I can find online, or by ordering microfilm? Or are there records available in the regional diocese?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Kim Davis

"registres paroissiaux",  is a term needed to do internet searching in France sometimes.

If you havent seen this> http://genealogy.about.com/od/france/tp/France-Genealogy-Records-Online.htm

give it a try for furthering leads.....      my thought is that one may have to contact local libraries and historical societies preferable in French written requests in Pau if the scope of Mormon films did not cover the specific requisite. The International genealogical Index , however, for European countries was at the time a very big idea quashed by a lot of churches so the appearance of Mormons copies of registers usually was ambassy chapels of the British COmmonwealth,  larger churches of large cities and some dissenter groups [ ie Dutch Reform Church in SA and Netherlands as a very loose example]
The French archives do contain censuses back to about 1790 but one has to contact the Archives to see how in dickens one might access them, and they will not be available on FindMyPast or anc sites as licencing terms probably wouldn't allow them being available.
You seem to have a lot of material already to do the construct you mention here and I think for the area and period you have done well to get back so far.

good luck

I'm not sure what thread you were looking at, but the departmental archives online does cover the 1830s and before:
http://earchives.cg64.fr/etat-civil-search-form.html

(registres paroissiaux are parish registers, but you'll only need those from 1792 and before, etat civil = civil registrations, 1792 onwards).

Census records have not been digitised and are nearly impossible to use for a larger city as they're not index. Civil records have indexes (ten year indexes and yearly indexes in with the actual records) but you will need to check each individual commune. There is no overall name search.

At first look I couldn't see a birth for him in Pau, possibly the family were actually from a smaller town near to Pau.

Reading this info about births in France  can anyone tell me if a wife who accompanied her husband and a child was born there Oct. 1815 did they also  have to register that child in the town the child was born in even though the child was registered by the chaplain.

I have his birth cert. from Army Register but just curious if he may have been registered by French authorities too.  Lookin2

They were not required to, and in this case almost certainly did not, being military personnel. British families resident in France may have but it is sometimes a bit hit-or-miss.

Hi,

I don't have the anwer. Are you sure that his mother is Marie Eugénie BASTON. Could it be BASCOU instead ? BASCOU fits better in the Pyrénées. Is there anything else you can tell us about Henri CAMOU. How do you know his mother's name ? Where did he live in Mexico ?

Jean Pierre (Juan Pedro) Camou was born in 1823 in Asap, Basses-Pyrénées, France. He married Aglae Camou Candaudap, in 1852. They had ten children. He died in 1906 in Guayamos, Sonora, Mexico. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Mexico, Arizona and California.

I couldn't find his birth record in 1823. There is a record for a Joseph CAMOU dit JUNCAS yet, son of Jean Laurent CAMOU dit JUNCAS and Catherine BASCOU (Frame 650/1863)

I checked if they had a son named Henri around 1830. Unfortunately, they don't.
