Alexander & John Myles
« on: Thursday 11 August 16 16:16 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find more information on my 4th great grandfather Alexander Myles. I knew very little about him until an excellent researcher found the following extract in the ''Mitchell Biographies of Scottish Excise Personnel'' held by the National Records of Scotland. I was trying to find where he was born. The notes did not help but at least they did say where he was living when he married in 1820, St Clements Wells. It also gave details of how long he had worked in excise, his pension and cause of death.

What was really interesting was the final comment ''Related to John Myles ?????? 1813?'' Can anyone work out what this word is? I have attached his file.

The researcher was also able to find the file for John Myles. The microfilm copy was not good. I need help in working out what it says. What is the significance of all of the dates. Does it say marriage 1810 at the top? (Alexander was born in 1789). Who or what is Johnston? I think that the bottom part of the record lists places that he worked. I can make out Peebles, Duns and Boness but I have no idea what the others are. I need to work out what the relationship is. Is John the father, much elder brother or is he an uncle.

I have attached both files. I do hope that someone can see this more clearly than I can. Many Thanks, Alan

Regarding "Related to John Myles", what makes it more difficult to decipher is the fact it doesn't begin with a Capital letter  ???

I'm looking at it though with thought  :-\

Too many "could be's"

The 1st 2 letters look like lower case then a Capital "C"  ???

My best guess is... ex Carron (a place name)

It also looks like coleman (coalman)

Sorry I haven't a clue but someone with better knowledge of old handwriting should be able to help.

Thank you for that. I did wonder if it was this wedding as there is 1810 written at the top of the sheet.
Alexander was born in 1789 so does this lend weight to John being an uncle or older brother.

Thanks, Alan

Ev,

That's interesting because Alloa & "Carron" which I mentioned earlier Reply #3 are within close proximity of one another.

"John Myles officer of easie(?)" probably excise ?
