Surname Mumbley /Mumbly/Mumble origin ?
« on: Friday 12 August 16 16:15 BST (UK) »
I have a friend whose grandmother had the maiden name Mumbly, It's the first time I have come across this surname and im now interested in tracing the origin's of it, im wondering has anyone else ever came across it especially In the Dublin area.
I have already checked the 1911 census and found my Friends grandmother at no 3.6 North Ann St Dublin along with her parents.
Christopher aged 26
Ellen aged 23
Maryann aged 2 (friends gran)
it states they have been married 3 year's with 1 child born.

I then found Maryann married on the civil reg to William Powell in 1931.

Im hoping to find out some more about the family pre 1911 (no record on 1901 census).
I know there are variations of the Mumbly surname such as Mumble, the E dropped and replaced with a Y, I guess for obvious reason's, its also spelled Mumbley.

I wonder if it could be distortion of the surname Humble?

An "H" could look like an "M"

No it's definitely Mumbly/Mumble/Mumbley with the variation's.
I have found several entries and later Marriages /Births from the 1940s-50s In Dublin.
I intend to visit the GRO on Monday for the 1908 marriage cert for Christopher, hopefully I can work back from there.

That's good news - just to satisfy our curiosity  ;)

Records show a marriage in August 1911 of Mary Mumley to Albert Ogilby ( shows as O'Gilby) in another record but no sign of her in 1911 census.
There is an Albert Oglesby though so could be mistranscription of both surnames. It could be Munnelly or similar, I suppose and the same with the one below.

Also a birth of William Martin Mumley in 1878 to John Mumley and Alice Rossiter Mumley but no sign later.
