Loughgilly Armagh Toner quadruplets 1831
« on: Sunday 14 August 16 07:44 BST (UK) »
Trawling through NLI RC Baptisms for Armagh - Arthur McDonald (McDonnell - Irish version?) - about 1831.  Unsuccessful so far, but was amazed to see Baptism of quadruplets in August 1831 - Neal, Catherine, Patrick and Francis Toner -children of Neal Toner and Sally Newell.  Quads surviving in 1831 - even just as far as baptism -  amazes me.!!!  One of the sponsors was a Mary McDonnell - as close as I will get looking for my Arthur.!!!
Serious question - My Arthur marries in Glasgow in 1855 stating place of birth is Lough Gelly Armagh - "Loughgilly" is as close as I can find - does anyone with local knowledge know if I am correct or is Lough Gelly somewhere else in Armagh?
p.s. - anyone interested in the Toner Quads - have the original Bapt. entry if anyone wants a copy - Am I allowed to post it on here?

Are you sure they are quadruplets?
And not just a "bulk" baptism of 4 children?

There is no mention of Toner family on this website:

Hi KGarrad,

No, the parish priest has actually written on the side "Quadruplets"... Can I post the original on here, or are there copyright issues re NLI???

Fair enough! ;D
Just post the portion of the register containing the Toner baptisms, and not the whole page.

Repeating my other question - does anyone know if "Lough Gelly Armagh" is the same as parish of "Loughgilly Armagh"????

Maggbill,  I would say yes that Lough Gelly would probably be Loughgilly Parish, as written by someone unused to the accent.

Thank you RosemaryJoan
That is what I was thinking - it is amazing how names of people and places vary when apart from the Irish accent, the individuals most likely couldnt' read, write or spell - and the "listener" was maybe a bit more educated, but not always accepting of the "Irish" invasion - so did a Scottish variation!  Thanks for your input
