The 1938 P.O. Sussex Directory does have Car Mart (73 Preston st Brighton) and Wade's (30 Chapel rd Worthing) - both motor car agents + dealers. Both on the scan.
The only thing I have seen resembling the mystery name is a garage in Worthing
Haslett Benj. West st, Worthing
In the phone book as Hasletts Garage, Worthing

I've had a play around with the image and I reckon it is Hasletts.

Looking at the x2 image you can just make out the crossing stroke across the 't's and the second and third letters look like 'a' and then 's'.

Many thanks for that.  I read your response on my mobile, which meant I was also able to focus in and enlarge the enlarged image.  And I think you are on the right track with Hasletts.  The closer you get, the more it looks like it.

Many thanks for everybody's help on this.  What would we do without the multiple eyes of Rootschat!

Kind regards
KA

Especially when you've already been told it could be Hasletts.

To acknowledge jonw65's prior input, the first line of my post should perhaps have read :

"I've had a play around with the image and I reckon it is Hasletts as suggested as a possibility by jonw65 in his post."

Apologies for any offence unintentionally caused.

Just an update.  I contacted the Worthing Reference Library as suggested.  And they were most helpful.  I sent them a scan and they have come back with copies of pages from the Worthing Blue Book.  Both the general directory and the Motor Trades Section.

The general consensus was Haslett's for the garage and an E D Hyatt was found also.

They were most helpful and I would certainly recommend them.

Many thanks for all your input.  I just wanted to let you know the outcome.

Kind regards

KA
