WW2 South African records
« on: Wednesday 17 August 16 10:40 BST (UK) »
I know I read somewhere of someone pointing to SANDF for records, but the thread was old and they were of no help to me when contacted.

I am desperately looking for specific records or access to the service records for SA servicemen that took part in WW2, as well as the enlistment.
Could anyone assist, or at least point me to someone that could assist in getting hold of these records?

Many thanks in advance
Fraser

All I can  suggest  is that  there were South Africa troops fighting in North Africa  alongside the British  8th Army  and the Australian  and New Zealand forces.

He was involved in some of the battles in North Africa as well as Italy apparently.  Family have misplaced all his info and I am trying to track it all down again, very hard considering all I have is his name.

Name is George Harry Townsend, born 26 Oct 1922, passed 04 Nov 1971.
That I am afraid is all I have at this moment.

I heard yesterday that George Harry Townsend was possibly a traffic officer before his passing.
Does anyone know if you can access traffic police records pre 1970?

I think that would depend on which province he was in as those records are likely to be  held by the city where he served.  Don't know how many would survive from that time...

I know he lived in the Eastern Cape. He was married in the eastern cape and was buried here, so I assume I must take a chance and try the local dept for info in that regard.
Was hoping that there was digital access to that.

Do you happen to know where in the Eastern Cape may be able to narrow the search down some.

Haven't found any estate file for  him on our archives..

Not much digital access that's what makes research here sometimes difficult and frustrating....
