Help with dating please
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 10:33 BST (UK) »
My father always said that the attached photo was of his uncle. The uncle was born in 1888 and died in 1956. The uncle lived in Lancashire.

Looking at the photo, I think it might be someone from the generation before, born 1853 and died 1933.

I would be grateful to hear what you all think.

Fabulous photo Sandgrounder!  :)

Jim is one of the experts so his date estimate will be spot on.

I think it is difficult to guess the age of the sitter. I think he is not as old as he looks, at a guess, he may possibly be in his 40s, bit his lack of teeth make him appear older.

Was he a coal miner?

That is a very odd question SB, and irrelevant to the OPs request for a date for this photo.  ::)

Thank you Jim, Scouseboy and Ruskie for your replies.  I guess Dad was right all along!  His uncle was actually a bricklayer.

Thanks again

He must have laid some serious bricks to look like this in his early 20's  ;D ;D

I think your second choice is much more likely.......maybe great uncle??

I think that refers to the date the photo was taken not his age  ;)

Am I  missing something then? Ok not in his 20's but... if the photo was taken circa 1920 as Jim1 estimates and the  favoured subject was born in 1888, that would make him 32yrs old  :o

Was he a coal miner?

SB, who perhaps has a system of telling a person's age by his profession, may have an accurate answer?
I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe
