Sentenced to life imprisonment
« on: Friday 19 August 16 17:50 BST (UK) »
I've just discovered my 4G Grandfather was sentenced to life imprisonment in Appleby in 1838 for stabbing someone at the horse fair
Does anyone know which prison he would have been sent and if there are prison archives
Thanks

Sorry Trevor I omitted birth place
John was a Gypsy/Traveller so I can't be certain at this time, but may have been Sebergham

I've just discovered he was sent to the prison hulk HMS Ganymede. However this was broken in 1838 the year he was sent there. Does anyone have ideas of where the prisoners would have been sent after that

Some records for John Berry are included in the crime registers on the Find My Past website. He was originally in Appleby Prison and sentenced to transportation for life.

There were several petitions from friends to have the sentence commuted (including one from the person who was stabbed!) -- it seems he was well thought of by these people and the stabbing was out of character.

I haven't yet found whether the petitions were successful - but I will do a further search.

Hi Pennines
Ive got some info from FindMyPast site, I've also found a newspaper clip about the event. Where did you find the petitions, I would really like copies if I can
I really appreciate your help
Thanks

I will send you a personal message.

Funnily enough there is another John Berry convicted in 1838 at York - to 14 years -- who has pleaded to be transported!

The prisoner number of YOUR John Berry is 5234 - just in case you can find something on the National Archives website for him.

The Berry's are a huge family of travellers, many were basket makers
I've found lots of petty crime for several of them, I also saw the one in York and wouldn't be surprised if they were related
I saw John's prisoner number on FindMyPast but didn't try to search on it yet
Again, many thanks for your help
