Alexander Nelis/Elizabeth Toman
« on: Saturday 20 August 16 13:58 BST (UK) »
The story of Alexander is here: http://irishamerica.com/2015/03/jersey-boys-irish-soldiers-i...
His stepmother Elizabeth Nelis (formaly Toman) was from Ireland but went to relatives in New Jersey where Alex followed and signed up to the army. He was killed in action 1918 and is buried in France.
He lived with Elizabeth in 18 Davis Street Harrison New Jersey in 1917 and it is possible that he married here not a hundred percent on that. Elizabeth lived at a few addresses ; the other two being 310 William Street Harrison in 1912 and 703 4th Street Harrison. I am just curious if Elizabeth had any more family alive in New Jersey? Who was she going to live with?

Hi Donal,

Here she is with a Toman family in 1920 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4RF-QS4

Also, presumably her sister Bridget in 1930

Hi Heywood

That was pretty quick in reply to my request, thank you for that. Yes indeed this is her and her family. It would be nice if I could trace living relatives of hers to get some information about her or maybe a photograph. This I am sure is a good starting point. Thank you again.

I was thinking you could search out any further information re the Toman and Backen families.
I am not sure about the Backen connection though as both women say they emigrated 1879  :-\

Since it seems that everyone involved went to the United States, I will ask a moderator to move this thread to the US board.

Yes Priscilla I have come across this as well. At the moment I am trying to narrow down to the present date the connections maybe still living if there are any. I am certain that Elizabeth Nelis (Toman) was the step mother of Alexander Nelis. His real mum Anne Jane Diver (My 2ND Great Aunt) died in 1897. Alex's father John Nelis married Elizabeth Toman in Belfast. John died a couple of years later about 1905. Elizabeth then went to America with Alex following.

It would be nice to have photos of Elizabeth or maybe any more connections of her family who may be still living. Who knows what may turn up. So the journey continues.

Do you have an obituary for her?  If not, you could try contacting the public library to see if they would do a look-up.  http://www.kearnylibrary.org/

I think this is Bridget and her husband in 1900 with Bridget's brother Dennis Toman - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9JJ-J8D

And 1920 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4RF-S27

Possible match for Dennis in 1910 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MKY4-K8V

Possible burial for Dennis in the same cemetery as Elizabeth - http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=105651607&ref=acom
