Cromwell's Men in Aghnamullen Churchyard?
« on: Sunday 21 August 16 16:02 BST (UK) »
Hi people

On a recent visit with my partner back to see her Irish relatives we made a visit to the Church of Ireland at Aghnamullen.  She recalled a visit she had made to the churchyard in 1980 when the raised tomb at the left hand side of the attached photo had a crack at one corner, and that when she looked in she could see what appeared to be several skeletons.  Local lore has it that they were the bodies of some of Cromwell's men.

The crack has since been repaired, but I wonder if there is any way we could confirm the story about the soldiers?  (There's no indication on the tomb as to its contents).

There was story about Cromwell in the area but it refers to the old church ruins at Templemoyle (Lattonfaskey townland). Cromwell was supposed to have blown the roof of the church with a cannon..... there is a lovely ancient graveyard there still.

He obviously didn't like that style of church architecture!

By the sounds of that account you would have to wonder if the local Catholics would have left a tomb intact if there were any of Cromwell's men buried in it.

The tomb could belong to the family of a Cromwellian soldier who settled in the area.
