John King of Harwell
« on: Monday 22 August 16 17:21 BST (UK) »
I have a John King died in 1777 in Harwell. His two marriages imply that his property was substantial:
Oxford Journal 16 December 1769 - On Saturday last was married at Harwell Berks, Mr John King Jun a very eminent Farmer of that Place, to Miss Corderoy of Blewberry, an agreeable young Lady with every personal Accomplishment, and a handsome Fortune. After the nuptual Ceremony, the happy Pair with Bride Maids and proper Attendants made a most splendid Procession to the Father's House, where an elegant Dinner was prepared for all the people of Distinction in the Neighbourhood; and at the same Time, the Public Houses in the Parish were opened for the Entertainment of Persons of inferior Rank. - After Dinner, every 'Consilation' to the new married Couple went joyfully round, with many other Toasts suitable to the Occasion; The rest of the Day was spent with Music, Singing, Dancing, Bells Ringing, and every other Demonstration of joy and Festivity. On this happy Occasion, the Face of the whole Village appeared cheerful and gay, and every Heart seemed transported with Ecstasy, too great for Expression. True English Hospitality was displayed in the utmost Perfection, and the Whole was conducted with due Order and Decorum, properly tempered with that good Humour which is the principal Constituent of rural Felicity, the real Characteristic of Love and Innocence.
Reading Mercury January 1774 - Tuesday was married at Harwell in this county, Mr John King, junior, a considerable Farmer, to Miss Turner, both of the same place, an agreeable young lady with a handsome fortune and possessed of every accomplishment that can make the marriage state happy.

Can anyone tell me if he left a will and if so where a copy can be obtained?
Thanks in advance.

The reason for wanting to find a will is that in 1791 John's widow had a son William Tyrrell King. The father was William Tyrrell. I'm trying to find a reason why William Tyrrell and Mary King didn't marry.

Hi antiqueone,

Are you sure that the Mary King who gave birth to  William Tyrrell in 1791, (father is also a William Tyrrell)   is/was the w/o  John King. My reason for this is that in Harwell, there is a Mary King bapt. 15-1-1773 baseborn  d/o Sarah Belcher. No other info supplied.
Also there are quite a few "King" families in Harwell  and I'm just wondering if there is cross connection along the line somewhere.

Interesting. It looks to me that his son  William Tyrrell could be the father of the William Tyrrell King
born to Mary King.

I see John King was buried along with his daughter Mary the same day 27-12-1777 Harwell.

I'm a bit confused here.

You mentioned 2 Marriages for John King, one 1769, then he died 1777?

Marriage;
9 Dec 1769, St Matthew, Harwell
John KING, Bachelor***, Yeoman, of Harwell Parish
Mary CORDEROY, Spinster of Blewberry Parish
(FreeREG)

MARY Corderoy was Christened 1 July 1745, Blewberry, Berkshire to ROBERT/ELIZTH

So she would be 46 when William Tyrell King was born, not impossible but unlikely in my opinion.

When William Tyrell King married 1817 Harwell to Jemima King he was of Farnborough

Does the second Marriage you mention to Mary TURNER 4 January 1774 Harwell have him as a Widower?
Do you have a Burial for 1st Mary King nee Corderoy?

If so, then if it is the same John King and he married twice the second Mary may be of an age to have William Tyrell King 1791

As Allan said there are a lot of Kings around in Harwell.

Trish :)

The second marriage was to Mary Turner. Mary Corderoy was John's first wife.

maybe it was a condition of John King's will that his widow would lose her inheritance if she remarried.
