James ALLARDICE Rossie Island Cemetery
« on: Wednesday 24 August 16 17:01 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the location of the above grave.

James Allardice was definitely buried in Rossie Island Cenetery in April 1836. FindAGrave have a listing for him and seem to indicate a gravestone.

But, the council only have records from the 1930s. I'm trying to get an approximate location as the cemetery is a large one and, as I'm visiting Montrose tomorrow, hope to have time for a look!

Anyone with local knowledge have ideas to help me narrow things down?

According to the Angus MI book, there are two stones side by side in Inchbrioch (Rossie Island) graveyard.

No 21 1836. Jas Allardice vintner Montrose 25.4.1836, by w Cath Bate

No 22 David Allardice d Montrose 12.1866 85, w Susan Barclay d Montrose 1.1851 83, da Susan d Montrose 7.1872 45 (h Thomas Moncur stoneware mert Montrose d Macduff 4.1859 36, by chn Jas, Susan and Eliza

In the sketch plan the stones are numbered from the gate, which is at the south-west corner. Nos 21 and 22 will be in what would be about the 4th row if all the rows were complete. Probably the most useful marker is that No 20 is an obelisk commemorating the Kinnear family from Goukhill.

Stand at the gate, and look just a little to the right for the Kinnear obelisk, and the Allardice stones should be just north of the obelisk.

Thanks so much,Forfarian! That'll make things much easier tomorrow. And I didn't know about David Allardice so even more to investigate.

Just an update to say I found and photographed the gravestone. Many thanks for your help - it was exactly where you suggested! I had a wonderful time locating my ancestors locations in Montrose and the surrounding area. Well worth the trip.
