Hi Jaz - I am not sure I am following the dates.

You say George was a platelayer in 1899 - is this from a child's birth registration/baptism?

You go on to say that

In 1891 his wife Ida now is a widow as stated on her second marriage certificate  in 1891 in Pontypridd she was  living in 49,  Hendrenny Street Tylorstown, did George die in a rail or Pit accident?  did he run off or remarry?

I can't easily see this 1891 entry - seems curious in light of what you've said about 1899.

I can see Ida B McGarth 35, b Bradford on Avon Wilts in Pontypridd in 1901 as wife of the head of household, Mortimer McGarth.

Children in 1901 are:

Edith M Cook 11
Sydney Cook 10
Herbert Cook 8
Leonard Cook 5
Muriel M Cook 4
Vivian E McGarth (son) 9mo

There's an Ida B Smith, born Atworth, with George L Smith, platelayer, on the '91 Census, address Porth Place, Pontypridd.

A George Louis Cook married an Ida Beatrice Keene, Melksham, Jun Qtr 1889. Have found an Ida Beatrice Keene on the 1881 Census, aged 15, born Atworth.

Is this the couple?

The remarriage:

Ida Beatrice Cook
Mortimer Edward Garth

I see she later describes herself as "married (legally separated)".

There's an Ida B Smith, born Atworth, with George L Smith, platelayer, on the '91 Census, address Porth Place, Pontypridd.

Their children at this stage (enumerated as "Smith" in 1891) were Edith M 2 and Laurence L 7mo, both born Wilts.

Birth registrations appear to be:

Jun qtr 1889: Edith Maude C KEENE, Melksham
Dec qtr 1890: Laurence Louis S COOK, Devizes (presumably the Sydney Cook, 10 b Devizes, in 1901)
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce

Worcs: Milward (Redditch)

The separation is confirmed in an article in the Rhondda Leader, 13 May 1913.

But what happened to George L Cook/Smith?

Thank you both for this information, George L Cook  was platelayer on his marriage 1889 not as I had typed in it was an error,
I could never find them in 1891census now I know why the name given Smith, how odd I wonder why, another puzzle. I have both marriage certs of Ida, she definitely married a George Cook,

Welshnewspapers online
http://newspapers.library.wales

Click on link, pop "mcgarth" in "Search". Returns 45 hits - the Rhondda Leader item is about half way down page 1. Click on "Ton Pentre Police Court".

Haven't checked which of the other hits might be your Mcgarths.
