William Knaptons Of Barwick In Elmet
« on: Sunday 28 August 16 14:19 BST (UK) »
Hi, I need some help linking up my ancestors from Barwick In Elmet. I've just finished pawing through the parish records and have found loads of information regarding them, they are the Knaptons.

My 4x G.Grandmother was Jane Knapton. Jane was born in 1805, to a William Knapton (Blacksmith) and Sarah Lumb.

From all the names I managed to get from the book of records, there is only one that fits as a candidate for Janes Grandfather and that is a William Knapton, born 1741 to another William Knapton (lets call him William Knapton Senior) who is himself, a blacksmith, born in 1719.

Of all the people in the book of records for Barwick In Elmet, This William Knapton Senior (Blacksmith) born 1719 is the only one that fits Chronologically (all the other Knaptons are at least one generation too early).

Of all the children of William Knapton Senior born 1719, William (born in 1741) is the only male who doesn't die (at least, that I am aware of).

It is this William (born 1741) that I would love some help with, I cant seem to find him after his baptism on 12th November 1741. Can anyone help???

Hi,

To start with

Well I don't think he died ~ well not until 1820

Barwick in Elmet ~ burial of William Knapton aged 80 years on 23 Dec 1820

Now to try and flesh him out in between :)

When William Knapton married Sarah Lumb they married by Licence, here are the details

William Knapton aged 21 born c1766 and of Berwick in Elmet
Sarah Lumb aged 21 and of Berwick in Elmet

So possibly loooking for a birth of a William K c1766 may lead to his possible father the William born 1741

I haven't done any digging myself, and I'm assuming from what's been written here that the marriage was in about 1787.

However, sometimes the age on a marriage licence is indexed as 21 when the document actually has "21 and over". If that's the case here, then on the basis that she had a daughter in 1805, she might have been as old as about 30, but it wouldn't rule out William being the one born c1741.

The extra names in the 1787 baptism should help in pinning down William and Sarah, and it might be worth checking for other baptisms in case further names/details have been recorded.

The marriage was transcribed as 1786 by licence on one website, 1787 by licence on another  :(

Yes I had thought it may well have been 21+, although Sarah Lumb was baptized 1768  :(

Can't see a marriage,  only one ~ that would match the William (bn 1719) and Sarah Knapton who had William 1741.

Ann Knapton's baptism was  the only one showing Grandparents unfortunately.

William and Sarah had numerous children from 1741 to the late 1750's

If your Knaptons originate from , or move to, Bradford then they will connect to my Knaptons who moved to Devon in the 1890s. I've a bit of info, and pictures, of 'the Devon Lot'.
