Book lookup please- Incorp. of Glasgow Gardeners
« on: Sunday 28 August 16 21:34 BST (UK) »
I understand there is a book entitled "The History of the Incorporation of the Gardeners of Glasgow" by P. Baird McNab, published in 1903. Wondering if anyone has access to this book (or similar publications with membership lists) and can do a lookup for me?
Searching for an Alexander Drummond, gardener in Glasgow in 1785. Thank you.

AbeBooks.co.uk has 1 copy left - a snip at just £38.50 ;D

Maybe an email to the Gardeners themselves might help?

I emailed the Gardners in Glasgow. They don't have records that far back. They suggested I try the Mitchell Library. Anyone going there? (I live 3000 miles away).

Your luck's in I have this book!

Skoosh.

Just checked the membership lists 1626-1903, both near-hand & far-hand, but no Drummonds at all I'm afraid. Will try again in the morning just in case.

Skoosh.

Thanks Skoosh. Ironic that there wasn't someone named Drummond as a gardener in Glasgow in almost 300 years!

It's not ironic kid, Drummond isn't really a common Glasgow name. Perth might be a better bet.  The membership lists largely contain many generations of the same families, the Trades existed to look after their members & did so for centuries. What makes you think this Alexander was connected to the Glasgow Gardeners?

He was named as the father of the bride in a 1785 Glasgow marriage registration in the OPR's. "Alexander Drummond, gardener in Glasgow". Obviously he now appears not to have been registered in any guild, etc. in Glasgow.  I agree that Perth is a more likely area where he originated from. Maybe Comrie as there is an IGI  birth registered for a Mary Drummond to a father named Alexander in 1764. ???

Hello Skoosh:

Mind me asking for another lookup in your book for Alexander CAMPBELL, gardener or an Alexander McGREGOR, gardener, both in Glasgow circa 1785?
Thanks.

lanarman,  I like your thinkin kid! your Drummonds are actually "Children of the Mist!"  ;D

There was an Alexander Campbell admitted 29th June 1775, far hand. In other words a stranger. A Donald Campbell also admitted ditto the next day. No MacGregor's in the members list.

Slainte,

Skoosh.
