Think I've found proof positve  :)

A list of existing Tollgate Houses - one listed in Rhydycroesau 'just over the bridge in Wales'

Sorry, didn't realise you had replied. I agree with what you say, but what puzzles me is that none of the dwellings on the census sheet are shown on the old map, whereas at least some house or farm names are usually shown. What I have noticed however is the letters TP in the centre of Rhyd y Croesau which I assume means turnpike. Maybe that is 'The Old Turnpike' where they lived?

I haven't seen the note you mention in the 1851 census.

Wow! Just seen your toll list and the pictures of the dwellings. You are good. Do you think those dwellings are the actual ones? One of them being The Old Turnpike?

Wow.

Wow.

I think it's likely as the buildings are certainly there on the old map:

Strangely, my parents had good friends who lived just up the side road from there and we visited quite often.  I remember old houses being there but didn't take much notice of them then.

The houses look really lovely today and such a beautiful setting. This is where my great grandmother Sarah Andrew was born. If you look on the 1841 census you'll see a baby listed as N/K (not known). It took me ages to realise this was her. Her birth registration is under 'unnamed female' so it wasn't very easy to order the certificate for someone with no name. When it arrived, guess what, there was no name on the birth certificate either! I've never seen such a thing before or since.

I notice there's a little church just down the road where the children may have been baptised.

Many many thanks for this, I would never have found this without your old maps and toll list.  :-*
