Whitney Family
« on: Monday 29 August 16 13:44 BST (UK) »
One of my brick walls is finding out more about my 5x great-grandparents, Joseph Whitney and his wife Mary.

I only know their names from the baptism and marriage record of their son, Joseph James Whitney.

The facts:

Joseph James Whitney, baptised July 16, 1809 in Deptford St Paul. Parents names are Joseph and Mary Whitney.

Joseph James Whitney married Hannah Reed on August 13, 1832. I don't have access to the original source so don't know if his parents names are mentioned.

Hannah died in 1870, and Joseph remarried to Harriet Ougham Grover on August 15, 1871 in Rotherhithe, Surrey. On the marriage certificate, it lists the father as Joseph Whitney, mariner, and it does not say that he is deceased.

I'm not sure where to start looking for Joseph and Mary. It's possible that they were not from Deptford originally.

Hi

Usually before civil registration started parents won't be named on the wedding register.

They ( Joseph James and Hannah ) did both sign the register and the witnesses were : John Knight and W heywood

On the marriage certificate, it lists the father as Joseph Whitney, mariner, and it does not say that he is deceased.

The marriage cert not saying the father is deceased does not mean he was still alive at that time.
"is he still alive" is not a required question -- all that is asked is name of father. If the respondent adds the info that he is deceased then it is noted on the cert.

As your Joseph james was 62 at the time of his second marriage -- that would put his father's age at over 80 -- not impossible, but also very likely he had already died so don't rule out earlier deaths as being your man.

It does say on the original register of Joseph James's christening that father Joseph was a mariner and the family were living on Church Street.

Yes I am aware of that, that's why I worded it as "it does not say he is deceased" rather than "he is alive". I'm just pointing out the possibility that he may be alive.

Hi

I've looked on the main sites for any marriage of a Joseph Whitney to a Mary and the only one that I can see is in Cornwall,

Joseph Whitney married Mary Griffith 9 Feb 1807 at Maker
