They may have gone back and forwards to Ireland.

1861 Lodging in Dalry we have;
James Beattie, 24
Eliza Beattie, 27
William John Beattie, 1

1891 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland we have;
James Beattie, 57
Elizabeth Beattie   , 60
Mary Ann Beattie, 22
Catherine Beattie, 20
Matthew Beattie, 18
William Beattie, 16
Children born Irvine, Ayrshire

Was going to suggest the Balby as place of birth in previous post could be mistranscription of Dalry.

There can be placed of birth differences because people can be vague and some enumerators are more thorough than others.
Campbell, Dunn, Dickson, Fell, Forest, Norie, Pratt, Somerville, Thompson, Tyler among others

Birthplace:    Scotland
Home in 1910:    Elderon, Marathon, Wisconsin

He may not have know where his parents were born or someone else may have given the information.  Later census records that appear to be the same guy have different birthplaces given for his parents.

1905 Wisconsin state census - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MM3K-QWK

1920 census - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MF2W-L6D

This may be his burial and gravestone:  http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=106480010&ref=acom

A possible entry on a naturalization index for him here - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wishawa4/Naturalization/Bae/Be.htm

There is a Jim Beatty mentioned in a book called Tales of Old Elderon by Allard Peterson, c. 1984 which is a collection of stories typewritten by a resident of Elderon, Marathon County, Wisconsin http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wimarath/ElderonIndex.htm

There are a number of online trees on a/try for this line such as here http://person.ancestry.co.uk/tree/43807489/person/12708108862/facts

They have these details in respect of James Snr's death:

James Beattie, Age 65, Male, DOD 02/03/1906 (UK Dating format), Place of Death 24 Springbank Road, Paisley, Scotland, Cert. #5461, Lair #248, Compt. #35

There is a likely corresponding death entry on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk which would let you verify that this is the correct entry for him. Lots of details on Scottish death certs to let you confirm it is the right James Beattie.

For wife Elizabeth, there is also this ref:

Elizabeth Beattie, Age 69, Female, DOD 13/03/1901, Place of Death 2 Westmarch, Paisley, Scotland, Cert. #5461, Lair #240, Compt. #35

There is a possible 1901 death entry on the index for SP, for a 67 year old Elizabeth Beattie who died in Paisley that year. There is no additonal surname included on the index to help further so you would need to view the original image online.

Daughter of couple Mary Ann married a Reid

From the tree I linked above are details of sister Mary Ann who married a John Day Reid. This entry is given for them from 1901:

John Reid 22 iron moulder b. Edinburgh
Mary Reid 26 b. Irvine
John Reid 16 Months b. Paisley

Address 2 Westmarch St, Paisley

At the same address in 1901 is likely entry for James Snr:

James Beattie 66 coal miner b. Ireland

The young Reid couple look to have also moved to the US around 1906, where Mary Ann died in Wisconsin sometime after 1940.
