Taxation in Halifax 1545
« on: Tuesday 30 August 16 22:55 BST (UK) »
I went to a lecture recently and the lecturer said he had found 4 men with his ancestor's name in an area of mediaeval Cheshire, taxed for (slightly) different areas, but 3 of them were his ancestor, being multiply taxed on different properties. I was startled by that as I am researching Broadleys in the Halifax area. In the 1545 Lay Subsidy list, out of 16 Broadleys being taxed, 6 are called William, of Halifax, of Ovenden, of Skircote etc. George Redmonds clearly accepts that these are all different Williams since he says there is one family of Broadley in the 1379 Poll Tax, but the family has ramified to 16 families by 1545. I am pretty sure at least some of these Williams are distinct people, from looking at other documents, but can I be certain that they are all different? claytonbradley
