Hello Jay 55,
I am following several leads. The THEAKSTONs I am interested in lived in Ripon or the area west of Ripon, including Eavestone, Risplith, Grantley, Sawley, and Laverton areas. My time frame of interest are deaths before 1770.
In the Hearth Tax transcript for the West Riding of 1672 there are a 9 THEAKSTON entries. I would be interested in any records for these household heads:
Marke Theakston(e) of Grantley with Eavestone (my research lists a burial on 8 July 1694 at Ripon Cathedral for this individual)
William Theakston(e) of Azerley
William Theakston(e) of Bishopside
John Theakston of Laverton
Francis Theakston of Laverton
Jeffrey Theakston of Ripon (Crossgate)
Gilbert Theakston(e) of Sawley
Gilbert Theakston of Sawley
Peter Theakston of Sawley
Given the proximity of these men and absence of the surname elsewhere in the West Riding, I am assuming they are likely related (brothers, uncles) but so far have been unable to establish definite links.
I know that the THEAKSTON name show ups frequently in some North Riding records, but I am concentrating on West Riding as the location of the lineage I am following.
Do your records show any deaths or burials that could match these early THEAKSTONs in the Claro Wapentake?
Any help or insights as a Yorkshire (born and bred) native and researcher would be most welcome.
Hi Ripon 2016
On the FindmyPast website there are 170 Theakston burial records at Ripon Cathedral and the dates range from 1589 to 1873. (Some are duplicated so probably more like 150)
Any one you are looking for in particular?
