Parish Registers - St. Giles in the Fields
« on: Wednesday 31 August 16 20:58 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know if these parish registers can be found anywhere online (particulary interested in late 18th century entries).

Thanks for any help.

London Metropolitan Archives only hold microfilm copies.

So you would have to pay a visit to them.

Ancestry appear to have registers only from 1800.

The website for St Giles-in-the-Fields states that all Parish Registers are now at LMA.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Nothing online yet as the original registers have only recently been deposited at the LMA so don't form part of the London Collection on Ancestry.

However, the LDS do have some copies of the microfilms if you can get to a family history centre.

There are partial trancriptions on www.familysearch.org

you can see the batch numbers here, scroll down to St Giles

or check the London Generations website for microfilms

Many thanks to both of you for your suggestions.

Unfortunately, it will be difficult for me to get to London to visit the LMA and the IGI batch numbers seem to contain a mixture of records which will make it problematic to be sure that I have checked everything (if only to eliminate this parish from my search).

I shall, however, explore the possibility of visiting a local LDS Family History Centre - I believe there's one in my local town.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Pennie

No promises but I may be at TNA, where the London FHC now lives, next week and can check what films they have there.

If they have them, what are you looking for?

Hi Dawnsh ...

Apologies for the delay in replying to your very kind offer - unfortunately, I have been away for a long weekend with very limited internet access!

I appreciate that you may well have already made your visit to TNA, but just in case not ...

I'm looking for any records (baptism/marriage) relating to a Richard WASTIE who appears in London tax records for the parish of St. Giles in the Fields in 1784, and who could possibly be the father of another Richard WASTIE who was born c1773 (according to his death certificate) and who married in the neighbouring parish of St. George's, Bloomsbury, in 1795.

I think that search would take in the order of hours, if not days - it's a very busy parish
Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH
Hants: FOSTER
Montgomery: BREES
Surrey: REEVE

There are no consolidated LDS films of the parish registers of St Giles in the Fields (access was refused), so they are not at the London Family History Centre (TNA).

The only access to the original registers is at LMA. For the late 1700s, the film of the baptism register is rather poor, particularly on the left-hand pages. For those pages that are legible, I generally reckon on getting through 3 years per hour (at this period). For illegible pages, you can ask for the originals to be produced (ask one of the senior archivists to counter-sign the order slip).
