Sharp/Levett families
« on: Thursday 01 September 16 09:51 BST (UK) »
Trying to discover why my 3xgrt grandmother's illegitimate son born in London was sent up to Glasgow as a child; according to the old family tale that his father's family (unknown) took him away from his mother. William John Levett married Charlotte Sharp and eventually came back to London to live.
Suffolk: Levett, King
London: Diaper, Shephard, Worth, Fletcher, Castleman

Is this him in 1871?

Jane J Levett   42
Clement Levett   20
William J Levett   16, born St Pancras********
Arthur E Levet   11

If so he is with his Mother and Siblings in 1861 also.
Jane Levett, 32
Clement M Levett, 10
Arthur E Levett, 6
William J Levett, 2********

If he left England after 1871 I would say it was likely for work reasons.

On Census above Jane is Widowed.

1851 she is Married;
Clement Lavett, 23
Jane Jones Lavett, 22
Clement Morris Levett, 5mths

Clement LEVETT married Jane Jones WILLIAMS 1848 London (Marriage is on Anc.)

Cant find a Christening for William John, but have for his other Siblings.

There is a Death Reg Dec 1858, Cheltenham (Gloucestershire) for a Clement Levett

Trish :)

William's mother was Sarah Levett , she married James Diaper 1855 in England -

Quote
Sarah, Lucy and an older son William are at 17 Brromhead Street Stepney, RG9/293/56/19

Thank you Ev :)

It confused me as 1881 Scotland Census has William John Levett born 1855 London and the other one was too in 1871 England Census.

Thank-you ev and everyone for your responses.
ev  -  yes I have William on the 1861 England census where he is living with his (now married) mother Sarah nee Levett DIAPER.
THEN he appears on the 1871 Scotland census as a lodger in Thistle Street with the KERR family.
He marries Charlotte Sharp in 1877 and in 1881 they are still living in Glasgow. In 1891 William and his family are back in St George in the East, London where they remain.

I doubt I shall ever find out who William's biological father was but I continue to search in case a descendant of his happens to contact me!!

Do you have his Christening?
15 May 1853, Tunstall, Suffolk
Although 1861 Census has him born St Georges E, Middlesex.

So the culprit is likely born Suffolk!

The 1877 marriage gives William's address as 24 Thistle Street Glasgow , and occupation as commercial traveller.
What was his occupation in 1871 ?

Trish1120 - I do have a copy of William John's birth certificate; he was born on 3 Sept 1852 in St George's, Mddx. There is a blank box under Father!
There were quite a few Levetts in Suffolk.

His mother Sarah was born in Woodbridge, Suffolk and in 1851 she was a servant in the Seggars household in Harwich (he was a Custom's officer) so I'm assuming that is where the culprit came from!! I remember my grandmother saying the old family tale was that William's father and family took him from her as a child back to Scotland but that is all I know.
