Hi all,

Reading this thread with interest. I am an Ayrshire girl and know the areas being discussed fairly well.
I have never known this area of Prestwick Road to be referred to as Monkton.
I would say that Prestwick Road and Woodfield Crescent are both in Prestwick on the boundary with Ayr.
Monkton is not far from Prestwick but is a separate village on the other side of Prestwick airport.

I am surprised at the area of Prestwick Road being recorded as Monkton in the 1930s  ???
I wonder why that was?

Looby :)

Hi Looby  :)

I have attached a clip from the 1930 VR. This is referenced as: Parish of Monkton, Ayr No.1 District Council.

Thanks Monica - as they say you learn something new every day  ;) I would have guessed that that area came under Newton-on - Ayr parish before I would have guessed Monkton  parish.
Woodfield Avenue is today local authority built houses . Judging by their appearance I would date them to pre-WW2 although they could be slightly later.

The other addresses on the Valuation Roll clip.....would they be nearby ??

Looby :)

I agree with Loobyloo.  Prestwick Road is in Newton-on-Ayr. It then becomes Ayr Rd. in Prestwick which was a Burgh since medieval times until 1975. Prestwick is  between Ayr and Monkton.
Have you looked in the actual village of Monkton? Kilmarnock Rd. & Tarbolton Rd. connect there. A short street off Tarbolton Rd. is Burnside Rd.  Orangefield Industrial Estate is beside Prestwick Airport. There was an old road which linked this site to Monkton. It's now dissected by the airport. That may have been called Prestwick Rd. once. It joins  Monkton Rd. which goes directly to Prestwick town centre.
If your people were there in 1940 were they connected to the air base?

Hi GS

The following ref (http://maps.nls.uk/view/82867623) gives the OS map showing the property you are interested in near the east edge of the map.  A large detached house now sitting somewhere under the car park at Prestwick Airport.
The old road was realigned to its present position, when they removed the runway crossing gates at the main runway - 1960's?

The 1934 P.O. Directory link which Monica gave was definitely Prestwick Rd. in Newton-on-Ayr. St. James church was No. 1. It's still there.

Hi GS,

Apologies for the misleading information in my previous post.  The occupant/owner of Westwood between 1934 and 1939 is recorded as a Mrs Fleming.  Unfortunately there is no further identifying information.

The owner/occupiers of the adjacent properties (Monica's 1930 VR) are as follows

Fairholme      -      Miss Guthrie
Runeknowe   -      Service F. J.
Redcroft       -      Taylor H.J.
Dragoon       -      Mrs Levenson, but by 1938 an Andrew Gilchrist.
