Unveiling Menin Gate 1927
« on: Saturday 03 September 16 12:20 BST (UK) »
In the family bible, written in her own hand, Mrs Jemima Davies of Rhymney wrote: "July 23, 1927 - I went to Ypres to unveiling of Menin Gate 24 July 1927."  Her husband Pte D J Davies was reported missing at the 2nd Battle of Ypres 25 May 1915 whilst with the Welsh Regiment 1st Battalion.  I have read many references to the inaugural unveiling ceremony which states a charity was set up to send close relatives over to Belgium for the event.  I would appreciate any help in locating details on Mrs Davies being selected as one of the widows to travel over for the event .

Kind Regards

The archivist at the CWGC may have something on this. Try contacting them.

CWGC replied but unfortunately no details.  Visited Newport Library today and viewed the Merthyr Express, Rhymney Valley Edition, again nothing; what surprised me more there was no reference made to the Menin Gate unveiling.  It being such an historical event I would have thought it would have some coverage.
