Explains the 8 year gap between eldest son Henry and next son Alfred on the 1881 census  - also their names.  I expect Henry Taylor aged 11 is really Henry McLeod Jr..

The Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915 database at Ancestry has a birth for Henry Edward McLeod on 15 Jan 1870 and baptism on 31 Jan 1870 at St. Patrick's, Cork, Ireland. His parents are listed as Henry Edward McLeod 22nd and Mary Hand. Their residence is listed as "Barracks".

The same database has a baptism entry for Mary Allice Taylor, daughter of Alfred and Mary Taylor on 3 Nov 1878 in Buttevant, Cork.

There is a birth for Arthur Taylor on 16 Jun 1877 to Alfred Taylor and Mary Hand in the  Ireland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911.

Mary sure was unlucky with her husbands. If the Henry who died in 1870 is the correct one then they were married for about 3 years before he died. Then she marries Alfred in 1876 and is listed as a widow on the 1881 census.

I think this is the marriage record that Jacquie found..... Mary Jane Hand and Henry E McLeod of the 22nd in 1867

Wow! I've been looking into my family history for several years and always drawn a blank when it came to Arthur and Mary Taylor. RunKitty and Jacquie, thank you so much for sheading light on this part of my family tree.
It looks as though the Canadians should have locked up their daughters when living near English army barracks! It would also appear that Mary hand was very unlucky with her men!

I don't know if this is the same Henry but there is a death of a Sarjeant Major Henry McLeod of the 30th Regiment who died 31 Oct 1870 at the General Military Hospital in Dublin and is buried at the Arbour Hill Barracks, Dublin. He was 33. His entry is near the bottom of the page:
