Stephen & Forbes boatyard Peterhead/ ship called EIRA
« on: Sunday 04 September 16 21:36 BST (UK) »
Hello. In this months edition of Aa the Claik - Newsletter of the Family History Society of Buchan - there appears a story about the headstone of Alexander Robertson in Constitution Street Cemetery, Peterhead . The headstone depicts a carving of a ship called Eira, built by Stephen & Forbes boatyard. I'm wondering if anyone would have a photo of this boatyard or any idea where I'd get one? My Great grand father served his apprenticeship there and when Mr Stephens died my Great Grandfather entered into partnership with his uncle Mr Forbes and the boatyard continued under the name Forbes Birnie.I'd also love a photo of the Eira so if anyone can suggest where I might get one I'd be grateful.
Many Thanks for reading.
Sams Mam.

Hi,

The attached (http://www.leigh-smith.org/552/) may be of assistance and/or interest.  There is also a Finnish ship sailing under this name.

Regards
Istrice

Hi, I live in Peterhead will try and get past the library at some point they have a lot of old documentation upstairs in the museum part. Drop me a pm with the details you're trying to find out will see if I can come up with anything. Will also go get you a photo of the headstone if you don't already have it.

Hi,

I am from Russia, never been in Peterhead (Scotland), but encountered names of Eira, Stephen & Forbse, Eira on the uninhibited Arctic islands of Franz Josef land archipelago.
They are beautifaul capes on Prince George land named after Peterhead, Stephen and Forbse. They were named by Benjamin Leigh Smith during his expeditions in 1880 and 1881/82 on 'Eira'.
+ there is also an Eira channel between Mabel and Bell islands.

My friends and I (project 'Open ocean: Arctic Archipelagoes') are enthusiastic researcheres of Arctic and history of its explorations.
Recently we discovered the 'Eira' wreck near cape Flora of Nortbrook island and plan to continue exploration. For that purpose we are collecting all possible information related to 'Eira' and Leigh Smith expeditions.
Is boatyard 'Stephen & Forbse' still operational?
Any relatives who may be interested in the 'Eira' expedition?

Some links about our Eira finding:

I hope the below information will be intersting for you:

In short: in September we found the wreck of 'EIRA' and started its exploration. More details you can find in the recent publications:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/10/27/wreck-found-near-north-pole-recalls-courageous-exploits-florence/?fbclid=IwAR3820ruRuiLwY74vTjAjwi1tOcy463T4W9DrqFM68jrUORgbPooPWjoX5o

If you have any questions - do not hesitate to ask.
From my side I would be unterested to find an archive information from the 'Stephen & Forbes' regarding 'EIRA'.

Rum container made in Scotland 'proves' a 19th-century shipwreck found by the Russians belonged to 'forgotten' British polar explorer Benjamin Leigh Smith
